Staying Fit in the Summer

​When the sizzling months of summer set in, everything seems to slow down—school is out until August, the tourism traffic makes for a slower commute, and that sweltering heat seems to cause us all to drag our feet anytime we have to hit the sidewalk. But one thing that doesn’t have to slow down is your fitness regimen! Here are some ways to stay happy and healthy from May to August:
  1. Exercise in the morning. Running on your local park trail before work, fitting in some sunrise yoga, or even sweating it with an at home workout video will help to keep you focused and energized all day long. The best way to beat the heat is by beating it awake!
  2. Lighten up. We understand wanting to avoid that summer heat as much as possible. Unfortunately, this often means we’re burning fewer calories in our attempt to stay indoors. To combat this imbalance, lighten up your diet with more salads (opt for a vinaigrette and ditch the ranch) and fruit, and fewer heavy meals like creamy soups and dark meat.
  3. Get wet! There is one upside to the astounding temperatures of summer: swimming! From natural swimming holes like Jacob’s Well in Wimberley, Texas, to free splash pads like this one in Austin, to your neighborhood swimming pool, nothing beats a day of play that doubles as one of the best all over workouts you can get! Just don’t forget to pile on the sunscreen and stay hydrated for fun that doesn’t end with a headache.
 
Our bodies are temples to God; vessels that help us glorify Him in every way we can find. Many churches have exercise classes that members of every fitness level and age can get involved in. There are plenty of ways to stay fit this summer without sacrificing fun or family time! This is one of the many reasons why our family loves summer, despite the climbing temps. With these helpful tips, we hope you learn to love it too!
